Swan 411/015

Swan 36 Hull #015 Albireo - year : 1978 - hull colour :White

Jennifer Stewart’s Comments

My first contact with the owners of Nautor Swan 411 ALBIREO was probably in 1985! The boat was hauled out of the water and they were busily sanding her bottom, and excited about their summer plans. This is a classic S&S design with a teak interior, which can’t be matched with the woods that are available today, the warm color especially at night cannot be replicated.

As far as her sailing and offshore capabilities, there is not much left to prove after 38 years of family sailing on this side of the Atlantic. Nautor Swan is well known for the cruiser/racer yachts that were produced in the 1970s and 1980s, as they made the yard famous. The interior layouts are not the modern designs, but were built to go sailing with the single and double aft, two settee berths in salon, as well as the foc’sle berths with hulls built to cut through the waves with sea kindly underbody and true bilge.

This is a great opportunity to purchase a lovely classic yacht with a great pedigree.

Owner’s Comments

Nancy and I have loved and sailed this spectacular Sparkman & Stephens 1978 Nautor Swan 411 (click for a short video) classic. We have sailed her for 38 years, from the cold waters of Down East Maine, to the moderate waters of the Chesapeake and Bermuda, to the tropical ones of the Caribbean – from Sint Maarten to Grenada. We have honeymooned, voyaged, vacationed, feasted, raised children, and hung out on this sturdy, safe, swift, and dependable member of our family. After all these years of use, we now want to travel abroad and enjoy landlubberly things like motor trips around Europe and train and canal visits to our favorite countries on the continent.

Other than her teak decks that are understandably worn, Nautor Swan 411 ALBIREO is in fantastic condition – as a result of her fine original build and our unrelenting care for every detail as she has aged. In 1999, we put a new rig in, just before we sailed her from the Caribbean to fresh water in Vermont – where we played on her there for 18 years. We completely rebuilt her Perkins 4-108 diesel around that time and since then have meticulously maintained that engine replacing various parts as needed. Presently, we are undertaking a large project to rehabilitate her teak decks and the process should be completed by the end of January 2022. We have overhauled her electronics, added a new chart plotter, purchased a new main and genoa in May of 2021, and done a million things to make her easier and safer to sail and nicer to be on.

During the late 1980s and early 90s, we occasionally raced her during the New York Yacht Club Annual Cruises as well as in various regattas in and around Narragansett Bay; and she did very well. However, from then to recently entering a special regatta in Sint Maarten in 2021 to celebrate her new sails, we mostly cruised in style. Amongst my favorite times were during our many sea voyages back and forth from New England to Sint Maarten where we now live. I used to relish our stops in Bermuda. In 2018, just before the Caribbean Hurricane Season, we cruised her from Sint Maarten to Grenada with family aboard. The voyage of 400 miles took us more than a month as evidence of the many stops we made along the way. We visited so many islands that it is impossible to pick a favorite.

Nancy and I cannot believe the good fortune we had to purchase such an amazing yacht back in 1984. At the time, we were a bit scared of the financial outlay as well of as all the technical sailing gear she had on her to help her go through the water so beautifully; but in time we grew comfortable double handing her and as we owned her for so many years, the financial outlay got easier and easier. Spending money on ALBIREO has been money well spent and time spent on her has been fantastic. Now it is time to let go and move on to new adventures. The next owner will buy a gem.

Our Nautor Swan 411 ALBIREO is in fantastic condition – as a result of her fine original build and our unrelenting care for every detail as she has aged. We completely rebuilt her Perkins 4-108 diesel around that time and since then have meticulously maintained that engine replacing various parts as needed. We have just completed an extensive rehab of her teak decks.  Fortunately, Nautor originally laid her decks with thick teak planks which are certainly worn; but after an extensive repair, they are presenting themselves as gorgeous. We have overhauled her electronics, added a new chart plotter, purchased a new main and genoa in May of 2021, and done a million things to make her easier and safer to sail and nicer to be on.
