Freya - Swan 43/008 - year 1969 - hull cooler dark blue
Freya was built in 1969 and delivered to Oxford, Maryland. She raced in a Bermuda Race and several other others under the name of Harpoon. In the late 1980s, her hull was extensively pealed and rebuilt with solid vinylester by the Lenox Company in Rock Hall, Maryland. She was Lenox’s personal boat. Vinylester has ten times the bond strength of the original polyester and is usually used as a moisture barrier. In 1998, the old deck was removed and a new glued down deck by Teak Decking Systems was installed. It remains in beautiful condition.
I bought her in 1999 and added a 17” J Prop and self tailing Anderson 58 winches on new s/s bases at the traveler ends. Either I at the helm or someone forward of the wheel can handle the jib. I have since added new standing rod rigging (2010), single line reefing, stack pack with lazy jacks, new 120% genoa on a Furlex roller fuller, new dodger (2014), rebuilt the Luke gas stove, new upholstery in the main cabin, converted the existing cockpit Barlow 30s to be self-tailing and added a Sinrad radar/chart plotter. Last winter, I replaced the Perkins with a new Beta diesel.
She has not had a lot of use in recent years since I have building my house. I am the architect, contractor, head carpenter and chief slave. I need a boat that lighter and I can more easily single hand.
I love her and anyone who buys her will have to be good to her. Freya is moored in front of my house in Harpswell, Maine. She needs some toe rail repair and paint.
