Dear Matteo,

I am pleased to report that we have decided to go ahead with the new teak deck for Kairos yesterday.

While this means that we won't be sailing this season we think if there ever is a good time to 'sacrifice' a season for some major work, it's probably this year.

We've decided to go with 12 mm thickness in the end and will also have the gelcoat of the deck/coachhouse/cockpit painted with Awlgrip, as well as the hull.

Will keep you posted on progress, just hope the yard won't find too many 'problems' once the old deck has been removed ...

Fingers crossed and fair winds,

Stefan

Hi All,

first step towards our new teak deck has been taken - our yard went to select the teak from their wholesale supplier.

They spent some time to select each plank individually and reportedly rejected 40% of it due to quality/inadequate standing annual growth rings.

The planks are slighly wider and will be plained to exact size at the yard.

Some pictures below,

Dear Matteo,

What is the width of your teak planks?  And also the width of the borders?

Thank you.

Hi Chris,

the width of Kairos' new teak planks will be 42 mm, which I understand is the same width as the current plank width.

Fair winds,

Stefan

Dear Matteo,

as seen in your picture, the original plank broadth might be 45 mm  because of the step under the joint, and the measure upside 40 mm as shown. My deck has the same measures. If I remember well, the broadth of the original deck was slightly larger, 50mm and 45 up

Dear All,

Rumtrader had her teack deck replaced in Turkey in 2009.

I estimated that she had the orginal teack deck so I took pictures of old deck and measured some specific details.  My objective was to have the new as close as possible to the original design.  For example the plank on the side were narrowed to give a longer and thiner visual effect (see picture below).

I also had to explain very clairly that I wanted no round ending but the cut ending as you can see on the picture before.

The teck was glued, no screws and all old hole were filed with epoxy.  12 years later the teack is still in perfect condition.  I have not done anything (not even cleaning !).

This work has filled all my dreams and participate to my pleasure every day I am on board.

Dear Ludovic,

it looks they had a very good "rigatino" quality of teak, nowadays very difficult to have. Do you know which caulking brand have been used?

Fair winds!
