Asbestos - Warning
Dear Friends,

we would like to warn S&S Swan Owners of earlier boats, those who have boats dated up to early '70, to check if between the stainless steel sheet above the cooker and the boat ceiling there is an asbestos film. Asbestos has been used in Finland (and by Nautor too) up to 1970, and maybe some of the older Swans do still have it installed.

In this case the recommendation is either to seal the edges completely, or to remove it, taking good care to follow instructions for asbestos work.
It can be replaced with for example Rockwool, or even thick fiberglass weave (not mat).

Please check you S&S Swan built up to early '70 ( found on a boat delivered in 1974)

I have been planning for a while to check for asbestos at that place, but have not yet dared to unscrew the plate. Here is a link about national asbestos bans. Denmark, Sweden and the US were the first in the 70s, Finland itself only came in 1992. Since the US was an important export market for Nautor, it is not unlikely that the 1973 asbestos ban triggered a change in materials. Given the sensitivity of the topic I wonder if Nautor can be asked to provide a statement precisely until when resp which model/build number they employed asbestos in the pantry. They may refuse to do so, because of reputational rather than liability related risks.

I think on by boat I had some asbestps in this place, I removed that many years ago already. CHINOOK was built in 1976.
