Neco autopilot, what kind of oil

Dear Daniel,

as the real Neco Guru, hope to get a pearl of wisdom out of you.

I have a Neco autopilot linear drive onboard Vanessa and have to fill in the oil. I have been advised not to use "normal" oil because the electromagnetic clutch could corrode. What kind of oil should I use?

Thanks a lot!

Dear Matteo,

I woul stick to what the original Neco manual indicates: a regular SAE 20 motor oil.  Following the forums on the net I read different opinions regarding the fear that regular oil might be conductive for electricity and now the one you cite regarding the possibility of being corrosive for the clutch.  I tend to believe that they are all "urban legends" and there is no actual basis for them.  The only doubt regards the viscosity of the oil: Neco advised an oil for cold environment (North Sea), during summer in the Med I would advise a SAE 80 which is the same used for the gearbox of windlasses.

Kind regards

Daniel
