Sail Triming on IOR yachts I recently visited a yacht called Oppostion in Cowes. She was recently restored and was one of Edward Heaths S&S Morning Cloud yachts. The skipper told me that he always trimmed the IOR yachts genoa first and then the main. Any thougths? John B Swan 411 010 |

Hi John I believe that a Masthead rigged yacht has its "main power" from the genua. Since there will be interference between the genua and the main sail it´s more sense to trim the genua to give it maximun drag and then to trim the main.

Pers that sounds right, I confess am an intuitive sailor as opposed to one who follows theories, but I cannot help noting that when I try to bear away on my 411 I absolutely have to let the main out. So the relative position of the mast in terms of trim has a big influence on balance and performance. John B Swan 411 010 |
