One or Two cutlass bearings?

One of my boat building friends as inquired about whether I have one or two cutlass bearings on our Swan 57.

I only have one - in the P-strut, and to my knowledge it doesn't appear that there ever was another. He was quite adamant that I have two for obvious stability reasons, but is there a maximum clearance between coupling and P-strut to encourage or insist on a second bearing in the stern tube?

Thanks

Dear Swanning Around

The original arrangement has one Cutlass bearing in the strut as you say.
Questions:
- Do you experience shaft vibration problems?
- If the engine has been replaced, what is the free shaft length, diameter and maximum rpm now? Is there a flexible coupling between shaft flange and reduction gear?
Kind regards
Lars
