Original Hella Cabin Light
Dear Friends,

I am looking for the original Hella Marine cabin light (should be model 2JA 003 232-051 see attached photos).

I have actually found at a local store a similar (it has same size/shape) cabin light, made in Taiwan, but I am not at all satisfied with the quality, they last for a very short time.

Any help is appreciated, thanks a lot!

Dear Friends

as usual Daniel ( 411/004 Luna Menguante) has a pearl of wisdom, and suggested me to look for the original Hella Cabin Lights at http://www.svb.de/ , and he was right, I found them!

They've got them brass or aluminum colored, at just above € 21, so, if you need them, thanks to Daniel, you now know where to place your order (website is in German and English)

Many thanks D.!

Matteo

Happy New Year to you and your wife.

The original Hella Ceiling lamps have had some advantages like narrow design wide light angle etc. The last production was more price optimized so that the robustness is not the same like 30 years ago. They are still available. See e.g. www.svb.de

A good alternative are odern LED lights with a light temperature close to the original bulb lights.

See the newest design under www.prebit.de.

I spoke with the product manager on the METS fair last autuum. The are very robust and show us the next generation of illumination on board and at home.

Dear Matteo,

our favorite lamps are the Prebit lights R-1-1 as spot at the aft wall of both bunks in the saloon (our eyes will be worser ans worser) copletely in crome.

For the ceiling we preferred the Prebit lights D2. In a few month they will be available as combination light white an red.

The light are a bit expensive but they are at the moment the best choice.

Have you tried out the SV8,5-8 based LED bulbs on the original Hella Cabin Lights? I think I will test them next season.

Dear Friends,

I would like to change some of my existing lamps to original Hella lamps. I found look-alikes from svb.de and Hella's catalog, but the diameter is different (103 mm in the catalog vs 145 mm original).

Does anyone know where I could find original lamps with correct diameter?

Regards,
Esko

Dear Matteo,

In my last refit I replaced all the original dome lights with new LED versions. These are Osculati type 13.408.02 . They have a touch switch and two brightness levels. They are very flat, and hide the marks left by the original lights on the ceiling panels. I am very pleased with them.

Hi, I'm a bit interested in those Osculati led-lights. What I was wondering was the material of the light base. It cannot be seen from the pictures and is not mentioned anywhere I found. Is it polished stainless steel or just chromed palstic? If plastic what is their condition afer these years of use?

Dear IHE,

Osculati usually has an incredible number of items in their catalogue, but medium quality, good but not the top, I think they produce most of them in China

Dear IHe,

The base is chromed plastic. The lights are fully sealed, with the leads passing through a glued cable entry. Power is 250mA at full brightness. The light is slightly more directional than the original dome lights, but the low power consumption and touch switch sold them to me.

Hi folks!

Thank's a lot for Your immediate reply! I found something very very similar to the Osculati light from the local (Scandinavian) store Biltema. Biltema is mainly focused tho "cheap" equipment and offers typically nothing for our loved old Swans. Take a look at this item and tell me if it is the same as the Osculati-light. It look very similar indeed. It can be found from:

I have made the sacrilege of using the old lights base (silver and black) and inserted the afeorementioned biltema led-light in it. I think it looks ok and functions quite nice. Can upload pics later if anyone has such a desire.

Here's a pic of the biltema-led implanted into the original Hella-chassis.

Dear Matteo and dear All,

Alas, I think that it is rather hard if not impossible to find the original head lamps. Furthermore, may I say that they were quite simple, not to say ugly. With the risk of being excommunicated, I think that nice looking head lamps might compensate for not being original. After all, we do add new winches, bow thrusters, perhaps new blocks and so on.

In the attached pics, one can see headlamps old style from Vetus.

Dear Philippe,

be veeeery careful, you really risk to be excommunicated, not for the Vetus head lamps, but for the bow thruster...!

Hello,
Well, as an old existentialist, I might take the risk of being excommunicated and declare that a cabin light should not be ugly. Aesthetic before blind originality.
