New engine for a swan 411
Hi, I am looking at replacing my Perkins with a Volvo D2 75. Anybody have any advice/experience on this selection?

We have a Nanni 4.50 on our 411 that came with the ship and has been working flawlessly. Since the engine is large, the previous owner needed to rip out the noise insulation in the cover box. As a consequence, there is a lot of noise even in the cockpit when the engine is running. One project for next year is to add a thinner insulation back in. If I changed the engine, I would put a lot of attention to this topic. With the old engine removed, it is possible to replace the complete insulation.

We have a D2 40 in the 411 we just bought. I haven't run it yet, but the previous owner used it off shore a bunch. I can forward his number. You can come down to Delta Marine and look at the installation.

I am keeping my Perkins. I have done a lot of work on it and it continues to run well.

Have your thought about rebuilding the engine? Or trading in the core for a rebuilt one? That would be considerably cheaper than buying a new engine and the replacement would be very easy.

Transatlantic Diesel sells rebuilt 4.108s for approximately $7000.

I asked the owner of the machine shop I use to give me a rough estimate to rebuild my engine - they said between $1800 and 2200.

Good luck!

Dear Sjackson
Would suggest that 75 hp is not really necessary on a Swan 411. It should also be considered that the turbo version needs a 3" exhaust, and larger air intake ducts.
Assuming Perkins 4.108 you should be able to cruise at over 7 knots. What is the max rpm and speed now?
Kind regards
Lars

I rarely run the engine at more than 2500. This gives me 7 knots. One of the exhaust valves is stuck and consequently I make a lot of my own oil and smoke like a tug boat. I am being quota $4k + to attempt to fix.

We're pretty open tomorrow. Probably watch the Hawks, but a boat break is always warranted.
