Cockpit Coamings
Dear Professor.

Are the cockpit coamings on Swan 40s reinforced with a metal plate?
I am installing a Monitor windvane and am drilling holes for turning blocks for lines that will go to the wheel. The first holes I drilled were about two inches down from the top of the coaming and inline with the wheel. When I tried to drill lower, about 3 inshes, I encountered metal. I am now trying to decide if I should just drill on through.
Thanks for your help.
Sincerely,
Alan Brothers

Dear Alan
As far as I know the coamings are normally not reinforced with metal, and you have hit something maybe intended for a special purpose. Can you determine if it is aluminium or stainless?
It would be advisable to take a look on the inside to make sure that nothing important is drilled through.
Kind regards
Lars
