Re-chroming, winches
SAFA (44/44, 1973) has her original winches, well maintained and well working ... but the chromed (bronze+chrome) winches (Lewmar 2 x 55 3-speed, 2 x 40 2-speed, 2 x 43 2-speed, 1 x 16 1-speed) do not shine anymore! Has someone done re-chroming of winches? The amount of work and quality of results are interesting.

Thanks Pro! I think the grinding, after removing the chrome, might be the critical phase in success to make them shine again.

make sure that the body of the winches (where the ropes actual are) are chromed a little bit rough (I don't know how the Chrome guys do this technically). The winches then look matt in this area but they get better hold of the ropes.

Dear SAFA
Winch drums need to have a suitable roughness, and the surface should be treated before re-chroming, see Forum thread dated 4 July 2012.
Kind regards

Hi! I do have good experience with rechroming; not a winch but Baby Blake toilet parts; good for a price indication: 250,- euro for all chrome parts. This was with a specialized car-restauration focussed workshop. It safes a lot of hours (costs) if you provide the not to be chromed parts with proper covering. About winches: I met people with a Swan 36 that did this with the genoa winches and they told me that due to first milling of old layer of chrome and also a bit of structural bronze, the winch did burst after the first nice breeze; take care for this by proper instructing the chrome-people.

Looks nice, just like the winches should be on 42-year old lady as SAFA is. MS.
