auto pilot for 38
We would be vary interested to here from any body who recently have installed an auto pilot,my adviser tells me its not straight forward because of limited space.
As a matter of interest we have invested in a new engine 37.5 hp Nanni also we have copied Only YOU with a 4blade variprop looking forward to our maiden sail with new set up
Good sailing,

matteo, thanks for quick reply do you know what model of the raymarine you had fitted also did your installer have to manufacture an arm to connect to rudder stock or did they manage to connect to
quadrant?

Dear John,

I had an American autopilot, Alpha, installed belowdecks, under helmsman seat near quadrant and there has been no problem with finding room for it.

Best,

Juan

no need to build a n arm, engine is rotary driven and connected to wheel mechanism with a chain (model Raymarine ST6001 - Computer S2 - engine T1).

Dear John,

We have installed an Autohelm 6000 in our Swan 38. It has been working perfeckly for the last 10 years. It is attached direktly to the quadrant and the engine box is placed in the aft locker. The space is very tight, but it is possible. If you need further guidance, please let me know.

jorgen,
Thanks for reply if you had any pictures of your installation it would be most helpful,we may go the same way as you, is your auto pilot Linear or hydrolic?
It seems to go this way its most important to fit a secure anchorage block to bolt auto pilot engine on too,it would be interesting to see where yours is installed. Thanks for your interest

Dear Friends,
attached is a pic I took this morning of my Raymarine rotary engine, connected by chain (see above pic) to the wheel.
I'm very happy about this very simple and strait solution

Hello, John!
On our Infant we have a basically similar system as Matteo on Only You. It is an old Cetec Benmar CS 21 R installed under the bottom of the cockpit. Works fine. Regards, Jyrki

Hi John, Our Autohelm 6000 is the linear type. As mentioned, the engine box is located at the bottom of the aft locker in line with the length of the boat. When the Autohelm was installed, a model of the anchorage - fitting was produced in light material (plywood). Here after a stainless steel anchorage fitting was made and attached to the inner side of the hull with 8-10 layers of epoxy material. The Autohelm is attached directly to the quadrant with the fitting provided with the product. The computer box is located in the cupboard behind the seat for the navigation table and the compass below the port sofa in the main cabin next to the diesel tank. Walsted’s boatyard has used the installation design a couple of times in other Swan 38. Hope this is sufficient for you – if not, I can ask Walsted’s to take some pictures of the installation. Best regards Jorgen

John,

I have also, as Matteo, an ST6000 but mine has got an S3 computer (on a 431). Although, I installed mine with an arm, and I must say it works just fine though you would need space to do that.
I recomend you to install a second control unit 'below decks': it's been of great help for me when dealing with bad weather and rain. For that you can choose between an ST6002, a remote control, or a multifunction raymarine system (C-Series and above). I first had installed the ST6002 wich gave me some trouble because of display's problems, and now I've just bought a C-70 multifunction that works just fantastic with the autopilot interface. About the remote: a friend of mine's got it for his Benetau First 42.7, and he says it's wonderful for sailing alone.

Sincerely,

Juan
