Swan 38 access to throttle/gear lever.

Hello Everyone,  Serafina (38/039) has the usual cockpit combing-mounted throttle/gear lever which I think requires serious maintenance or even replacement.  (I can no longer select neutral with the little button which complicates close quarters manoeuvring!).  My question is has anyone succeeded in accessing the unit either via the lazaratte or aft cabin.  If the latter it seems I'll need to take half the boat apart to get to it!

Any thoughts most gratefully received.

Fair winds.........

Hi John,

from lazarette, not easy but you can do it (at least, last time I did it I was a bit less than 59 years old and manage to do it !)!

Please let us know  and possibly post some pictures!

Hello, John!

I confirm Matteo's message. Morse assembly can be detached through the lazarette. Also the throttle and gear cable can be drawn out for cleaning and oiling. If you wish, I can send some fotos.
Best wishes,

Thank you Matteo and Jyrki.  I am most grateful for your advice (and happy to note that access maybe possible via the lazarette and not the aft cabin).  Jyrki, pictures would be fab - if its not asking too much.

NB I am now entering on a strict diet before attempting this task.  If you do not hear from me for a few weeks it maybe that i've become stuck down there!

As ever, Fair Winds.....

Dear John,

our boats are so perfect Rod and Olin Stephens did not only think about the sailing and seaworthy capabilities, but even to the well-being of their owners, so you must be fit to access some hidden compartments ;-) !

Keep us posted!

Fair winds,

matteo (47/069 Vanessa)

PS  a friend of mine some time ago entered the lazarette of his S&S Swan 47 but did not realize he was not able to exit, if not with the help of someone else ...!

Hello, John!

The lazarette is too small for me, so I had to work without eye contact, looking at these fotos.

If I remember right, I
1.) detached the back plate from the control head (four screws), and released the cables from the plate (clips).
2.) detached the control head from hull (three screws).
3.) detached the cable wires from the control head clutch lever and throttle arm.

The control head was in need of thorough cleaning and re-greasing.

I flushed the cables pouring WD-40 through a length of silicone tubing tightly fitting on the cable mantle (tube hanging from workshop ceiling). I moved the cable wire at the other end. After the WC-40 run out clear, I blew it out with pressure air and poured CRC-6-66 through the cable.

These procdures had a great impact on gear and throttle control function.

Attached a couple of fotos.

Best regards
