Swan 41/010 Galatea - Refit Dear sailing friends, I have decided to give Galatea a full refit in the coming months. With this thread keeping you updated on progress and I'm sure that I will have some questions for you during the process :) Hutting Yachts in Makkum (NL) will perform the refit. We will give Galatea a new teak deck, a full paintjob, new rigging, renew the whole electrical installation, new navigation equipment, renew hardware (like self tailing winches), other detailing like a new (original type) cockpit tent, and some interior upgrades. I bought Galatea (ex Chinacat) in Denmark and sailed her to The Netherlands. Unfortunately we experienced an engine breakdown (original Perkins) close to Heiligenhafen. Decided to therefore already replace the engine for a new Volvo Penta D2-50 which was performed at a local yard in Heiligenhafen. I hope you will enjoy following this project and if you have any tips / recommendations would love to hear! Best regards, Carl |

For some reason I struggle uploading pictures to this forum, but maybe even more fun with videos! The yard will create some YouTube videos during the project so thought interesting to share with you as well: https://youtu.be/NItNkV-Tm0Y?si=W0Nk9TMxTmUcd9Zs

Please bear with me as I'm finally getting some time to resize the images so they fit on the forum :) I will upload pictures here as we go. The pics from the last post is how she was brought into the yard ready to be taken care off! Best regards, Carl 41/010 - Galatea |

![]() Start of the teak deck removal ![]() Almost all removed! ![]() Unfortunately the original engine cover did not fit over the new D2-50. Hereby the creation of an adjusted cover. Luckily the original stair can stay. |

![]() Working on filling all unnecessary holes ![]() There was a platform on the bow which was practical but in my opinion did not fit the boat / did not look good. We will therefore remove it completely - here the holes are filled. |

This is pretty interesting... seems Galatea originally had a red stripe. Or at least it seems the blue stripe was painted witouth removing the windows. You can see the red color under the window frames :) ![]() |

Hello Carl! Nice work you're doing with Chinacat. We're on as same journey with our Swan 41 Pampero. Going through the pictures I noticed that Chinacat has a windlass? We're installing one for Pampero and it would be very nice to get some pictures below deck. Especially from bow, where the chainlocker is located. I'm planning to modify the locker to hold 50mm of 8mm stainless chain so any tips are welcome. Fair winds, Henri s/y Pampero 41/048 |

Hi Henri! I'm following your thread as well! Nice to see we are doing similar work on our boats! Hereby some pics from how it currently is in place for Galatea. As you can see, the chain is just laying loose in the bow right now. So nothing special. I have no experience yet anchoring with Galatea as I just bought her a few months back. Hope these pics give a bit of an idea. Curious to hear from other 41 owners how their set up is.

One item that I would love to get some advice on is the original Nautor mast. We discovered that there is a slight bend in the mast which is raising some concerns. Given that we are renewing all the rigging and most likely also a the boom, potentially thinking to also replace the mast to be fully on the safe side. Unfortunately, this is not preferred budget wise... but safety first of course... we will get some quotes for a full package (new boom + mast) and wondering if any of you have any recommendations on this or any of you have replaced your mast and any do's / dont's you can share? Best regards, Carl (41/010 - Galatea)

Hi Matteo, There is no visible damage, it is just slightly bended and stays in a slght banana shape. Theory is that the mast has potentially been flexing a lot (maybe not running the backstays in heavy weather) which might have caused this. If no replacement is needed, I would love to keep the original mast. Hopefully the rigger will shed some additional light on this soon. And thanks for your tip via WA on potentially doing an ultrasound. If any other owners had similar mast situations, would love to hear! Best regards, Carl - (41/010 - Galatea) |

Question about the water line. Really like a double waterline but Galatea has a single waterline today. Looking at the original drawings, it seems the 41 had 2, but on many pictures of 41's I only see one. How were these boats originally delivered? Funny enough, when you look at the picture in my previous post from the bow, it looks like Galatea had 2 lines. The bottom line (redish) is however too low and basically sits in the water (and previous owner put antifouling over it). So thinking about keeping the location of the dark blue stripe and then adding one on top. Do any of you have the original dimensions of the these stripes (so for example, should the top one be twice as thick as the bottom one?). Curious to hear!
